Evaluating our organization

Many of us librarians here at WSU are extensively involved in the American Library Association. There are also many of us who like to complain about various things, like high dues, summer conferences in Orlando and Chicago, and winter conferences in Philadelphia and Denver (and Chicago :-) This recent posting by K.G. Schneider on her Free Range Librarian blog really hits the nail on the head.

So, comrades: are we up for it?

Hopefully. I think that ALA is stagnating in some interesting ways. I thought that Schneider's comments on the ALA's refusal to adopt new technologies in communication and meetings were very significant. At these meetings, all the conversation is on how to do things differently, but the organization rejects change out of hand. I guess those in power just have priorities that are different from the bulk of the membership.
